A sold-out crowd gathered at the Fenimore Farm & Country Village on Sunday afternoon, October 26, for a radiant Diwali Celebration that brought light, warmth, and joy to Cooperstown. Hosted by Cooperstown Concerts, the event brought together people of all ages across the region to share in the joy of Diwali – the Festival of Lights, celebrating renewal, hope, and the triumph of light over darkness.
The afternoon began with a live concert and stunning performance by internationally acclaimed vocalist Kiran Ahluwalia, who engaged the audience with her soulful voice and storytelling. The concert blended traditional and contemporary songs creating a rich, cross-cultural soundscape as Kiran and her band – featuring her husband, world-class guitarist Rez Abbasi, along with band members on accordion and percussion – brought layers of rhythm, beauty, and emotion to every song.
Kiran’s messages of hope, compassion, light, and renewal resonated deeply with the audience. Throughout her performance, Kiran reflected the spirit of Diwali: the importance of bringing light into ourselves and the world, the meaning of humanity, and standing up for the oppressed, even in the darkest of times.
Following the concert, guests enjoyed a delicious Indian dinner, as Dr. Namita Sugandhi of Hartwick College also shared interesting insights into Diwali’s history and traditions. The buffet included a wide selection of delicious dishes including Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Biryani, Saag Paneer, Aloo Gobi, Vegetable Pakoras, basmati rice, naan, Gulab Jamun, and other traditional favorites.
The event was a true family affair, with children, parents, and grandparents all joining in the celebration – talking, laughing, and connecting as a community – capturing the essence of Diwali throughout the afternoon.
Special thanks to Dr. Anush Patel, his wife Bijal, and their children for their generous support in helping to make this Diwali Celebration such a special event.
