The award-winning, virtuosic violin-guitar duo ArcoStrum, will bring their captivating music to the stage on April 5, 7:30 PM, for an unforgettable evening at the Fenimore Art Museum theater in Cooperstown. Blending modern with traditional, the acclaimed duo is pushing boundaries and redefining the 21st-century violin-guitar art form, presenting a new chamber music that is mixed-genre, multi-cultural, and cross-era. ArcoStrum’s performances have been described as thrilling and brilliant, representing “the highest level of technical excellence and musicianship among the new generation of performing artists.”
Recent winner, and Audience Prize recipient, at the prestigious 2023 Concert Artists Guild (CAG) Victor Elmaleh Competition, ArcoStrum is the first ever violin-guitar duo to win the competition in the program’s 70-plus year history. AcroStrum includes Strauss Shi, three-time international First Prize-winning violinist, and TY Zhang, the Grand Prize winner of the Guitar Foundation of America-International Concert Artist Competition (GFA-ICAC).
Former classmates at The Juilliard School, Shi and Zhang share a passion for the timeless art of profound music, paired with unbridled creativity. The duo notes that they formed the group with the mission to redefine the 21st-century violin-guitar art form through their arrangements of all-time classics, and their unique blend of Chinese-Western instrumentations, to the modern progressive rock. The group’s name is a portmanteau fusing a bowing technique for the violin and the motion used to create sound on a guitar.
“With performances that span the globe, ArcoStrum has dazzled audiences around the world with their charisma, technical brilliance, and dynamic onstage chemistry,” said Randy Smith, Cooperstown Concerts president. “We’re thrilled to present such virtuosic musicianship and a truly one-of-a-kind experience to our community as part of Cooperstown Concerts’ ongoing dedication to bringing world-class music close to home.”
